DARING GREATLY

CHAPTER 1
SCARCITY: LOOKING INSIDE OUR CULTURE OF “NEVER ENOUGH”

YOU can’t swing a cat without hitting a narcissist.”

It doesn’t matter if I’m talking to teachers, parents, CEOs, or my neighbors, the response is the same: These egomaniacs need to know that they’re not special, they’re not that great, they’re not entitled to jack, and they need to get over themselves. No one cares.

LOOKING AT NARCISSISM THROUGH THE LENS OF VULNERABILITY

Diagnosing and labeling people whose struggles are more environmental or learned than genetic or organic is often far more detrimental to healing and change than it is helpful.

when I look at narcissism through the vulnerability lens, I see the shame-based fear of being ordinary.

I am only as good as the number of “likes” I get on Facebook or Instagram. Because we are all vulnerable to the messaging that drives these behaviors.

I know how seductive it is to use the celebrity culture yardstick to measure the smallness of our lives.

SCARCITY: THE NEVER-ENOUGH PROBLEM

Lynne Twist, In The Soul of Money, refers to scarcity as “the great lie.” She writes: For me, and for many of us, our first waking thought of the day is “I didn’t get enough sleep.” The next one is “I don’t have enough time.”

Scarcity is the “never enough” problem.

Nostalgia is also a dangerous form of comparison. Think about how often we compare ourselves and our lives to a memory that nostalgia has so completely edited that it never really existed: “Remember when…? Those were the days…”

THE SOURCE OF SCARCITY

Worrying about scarcity is our culture’s version of post-traumatic stress.

I found the same dynamics playing out in family culture, work culture, school culture,
and community culture. And they all share the same formula of shame, comparison, and disengagement.

  1. Shame: Is fear of ridicule and belittling used to manage people and/or to keep people in line? Is self-worth tied to achievement, productivity, or compliance?
  2. Comparison: Healthy competition can be beneficial, but is there constant overt or covert comparing and ranking?
  3. Disengagement: Are people afraid to take risks or try new things? Is it easier to stay quiet than to share stories, experiences, and ideas?

The counterapproach to living in scarcity is not about abundance. In fact, I think abundance and scarcity are two sides of the same coin. The opposite of “never enough” isn’t abundance or “more than you could ever imagine.”

The opposite of scarcity is enough, or what I call Wholeheartedness.

The greatest casualties of a scarcity culture are our willingness to own our vulnerabilities and our ability
to engage with the world from a place of worthiness.

DARING GREATLY

INTRODUCTION

In The Gifts of Imperfection, I defined ten “guideposts” for Wholehearted living that point to what the Wholehearted work to cultivate and what they work to let go of:

  1. Cultivating Authenticity: Letting Go of What People Think
  2. 2. Cultivating Self-Compassion: Letting Go of Perfectionism
  3. Cultivating a Resilient Spirit: Letting Go of Numbing and Powerlessness
  4. Cultivating Gratitude and Joy: Letting Go of Scarcity and Fear of the Dark
  5. Cultivating Intuition and Trusting Faith: Letting Go of the Need for Certainty
  6. Cultivating Creativity: Letting Go of Comparison
  7. Cultivating Play and Rest: Letting Go of Exhaustion as a Status Symbol and Productivity as Self-Worth
  8. Cultivating Calm and Stillness: Letting Go of Anxiety as a Lifestyle
  9. Cultivating Meaningful Work: Letting Go of Self-Doubt and “Supposed To”
  10. Cultivating Laughter, Song, and Dance: Letting Go of Being Cool and “Always in Control”

Wholehearted living is about engaging in our lives from a place of
worthiness. It means cultivating the courage, compassion, and connection to
wake up in the morning and think, No matter what gets done and how much
is left undone, I am enough.

Fundamental ideals:

  1. Love and belonging are irreducible needs of all men, women, and children.
  2. Those who feel lovable, who love, and who experience belonging simply believe they are worthy of love and belonging.
  3. A strong belief in our worthiness doesn’t just happen—it’s cultivated
  4. The main concern of Wholehearted men and women is living a life defined by courage, compassion, and connection.
  5. The Wholehearted identify vulnerability as the catalyst for courage, compassion, and connection.

Imperfect parenting moments turn into gifts as our children watch us try to figure out what went wrong and how we can do better next time.

Perfection doesn’t
exist, and I’ve found that what makes children happy doesn’t always prepare them to be courageous, engaged adults.

What we know matters, but who we are matters more.

The first step of that journey (to dare greatly, to be vulnerable) is understanding where we are, what we’re up against, and where we need to go.

Reflections: Fasting

We muslims fast in the month of Ramadhan. Let’s start by asking why. Why do we fast? What is the purpose of fasting? What are we supposed to get out of fasting? What do we we gain from it? what did we gain from fasting previous years? Unfortunately, for many of us, fasting Ramadhan has become a custom. We don’t do what breaks the fast like eating and drinking. By doing this, we get content that we fasted during this blessed month. If we ask some muslims about the reason of their fasting, the reply is to share the feeling that the poor people have. This is a very good point. When we are thirsty or hungry, we are supposed to remember the poor and the needy and their difficult life. What is the result of this? First, be grateful for what Allah has given us. No matter how little it is. Second, try to help the needy as much as we can no matter how little it is. Do not belittle an act of goodness. It can be huge in the eyes of Allah. It is not about the quantity, but the quality of our actions. We should not forget that the poor do not have food to eat to almost the entire year. While we experience thirst and hunger for a fraction of the day for only a month. They might get food or they might not. We, on the other hand, have a fridge filled with food and have someone preparing food for us. So we know there will be food when we are breaking our fast. Then how can we have the same feeling as them? There is a big gap.

Our beloved prophet PBUH has said in a narration to this meaning that some people fast in this month and all they from they fasting is thirst and hunger. May Allah not make us one them.

Allah says in quran that fasting is prescribed to us so we gain taqwa (تقوی). what is taqwa? Dues to the richness of the arabic language, this word has many meanings in the English language. One of these is to have God-consciousness. what this means is that in all situations we are conscious of Allah. That He is aware of our situation and aware of what we do. So let us ask ourselves how much taqwa we gained in the past years. If we did not gain any taqwa, then what did gain from fasting? When we gain more taqwa, we get closer to Allah. This will automatically make a better human being. This in turn, will make us care for other human beings. So we work hard during this blessed month to get closer to Allah, so we become better believers and hence better human beings. This will help us build a better community.

Reflections Jan. 2019

We worship the one who made me. He is The creator. The relationship is between you and Allah. You confess only to Allah. Not anyone else since anyone else might have sins greater than yours. Allah will judge us on the day of judgment. Neither was he begotten not does He beget. You cannot have anyone at the same level as Allah. All the qualities of the prophet do not come close to Allah’s. If someone claims love, there should be actions associated with it. Words should be proven by actions. How can you love Allah and sleep during Fajr time. Always be conscious of Allah. This is taqwa. This will save you. The development of consciousness of Allah will protect us from His wrath. We don’t render an act of worship to anyone besides Allah. We don’t worship Allah based on how we feel. Iblis said I’m better than him. This was his downfall. This happens to us when we see someone with worldly possessions. We try to label him with accusations of Haram income and Haram conduct. We get inspiration from iblis.

The Prophet’s Methods of Dealing with People’s Mistakes- p2

16 – Avoiding helping the Shaytaan against the one who is making a mistake.

17 – Asking the person to stop doing the wrong action. It is very important to make the person stop the wrong deed so that it does not get any worse and so that there is no delay in the denunciation of evil.

18 – Explaining to the person who is making a mistake how to put things right.

– Drawing an individual’s attention to his mistake so that he could put it right himself.

– Asking the person to do something again, correctly, if this is possible.

Among the qualities of the educator is that he should be aware of the actions of those who are with him.

1. It is a part of educational wisdom to ask a person who has made a mistake to re-do his action.

2. If the person who has made a mistake does not realize it, it must be pointed out and explained to him.

3. Giving information to a person who is interested and has asked about it himself is more effective and is more likely to be remembered.

19 – Denouncing only the mistake whilst accepting the rest.

20 – Restoring rights and preserving positions.

It is very important to maintain a person’s position after he has repented from his mistake and set matters straight, so that he will remain on the right path and live a normal life among people.

21 – Addressing both parties in cases where the blame is shared.

22 – Asking the person to forgive the one who wronged him.

Quranic Verse: Chp. 3 V. 19

c3v19

Allah [may He be Glorified] said: “Truly, the religion in the sight of Allâh is Islâm. Those who were given the Scripture (Jews and Christians) did not differ except, out of mutual jealousy, after knowledge had come to them. And whoever disbelieves in the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, then surely, Allâh is Swift in calling to account.” (3:19)

Allah tells us in this verse that:

– Islam is the only religion acceptable to Allah to the exclusion of any other religion.

Islam denotes the inward and the outward submission to Allah in all that He has legislated and ordained either in His glorious Book or through the sayings of His prophet: Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Allah [may He be Glorified] said: “And whoever seeks a religion other than Islâm, it will never be accepted of him, and in the Hereafter he will be one of the losers).” (3:85)

– So, whosoever adopts a religion other than Islam is not on the right path, because he does not follow the way ordained by Allah through His Messenger (peace be upon him).

– Allah [may He be Glorified] tells us in this verse that the People of the Book knew very well that this was the truth but they deviated from it out of oppression and stubbornness.

– And when Muhammad (peace be upon him) came to them, they knew for certain that he was the Messenger of Allah – exactly as they recognized their own children – but envy, oppression and the denial of the signs of Allah kept them away from the right path.

The phrase “And whoever disbelieves in the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allâh, then surely, Allâh is Swift in calling to account” means: let those who disbelieve in the verses and the signs of Allah wait; the promise of Allah is already coming and they will be recompensed according to their deeds.
